What factors cause facial lines?

Factors include repeated muscle contractions from squinting, frowning, or raising eyebrows, which lead the skin to furrow or fold, causing facial lines. Other contributing factors are the reduction of collagen, cellular aging, and free radical damage from the sun and environment.

What is Botox?

Botox is a neuromodulator, which means it’s a muscle relaxer.

What does Botox treat?

Botox is a prescription injection that treats many conditions, including migraines and an overactive bladder. Botox is also used to treat facial wrinkles, which are the fine lines and grooves that develop from repeated facial expressions.

Botox treatments include:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating)

When you frown or squint, the facial muscles create a groove that folds the skin. Your skin thins and loses its elasticity as you get older due to collagen loss. The repeated folding and change in skin structure lead to more permanent etched lines and wrinkles. By stopping muscle movement, Botox gives your skin a chance to relax, so the wrinkles naturally smooth.

When can I expect to see results from Botox?

You may see improvements in your look within a day or two after your Botox injections; however, it can take up to 30 days to see the full effects.

What are the immediate side effects of Botox?

  • Bruising or bleeding at the injection site
  • Localized pain
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation

*These side effects do not always occur and if they do, they usually resolve in a few days

What should I expect from the in-office Botox consultation?

All procedures at our office, Spectrum Health Med Spa, require a consultation with Dr. Thampy. Your concerns and goals are assessed, along with a health screening for safety and indication. The risks and benefits of individual procedures are discussed, and informed consent is obtained. Appropriate pictures are taken for documentation, progress, and result monitoring. Botox is administered via a fine, hypodermic needle with aseptic precautions.

Comfort options for Botox include numbing gel and ice. Numbing gel takes an additional 30–40 minutes prior to Botox administration. The dose of Botox is determined at consultation after assessing the desired goal, safety, location, and health status, like any other medical procedure. Botox injections usually last for 3–4 months.

Dr. Thampy suggests scheduling your next Botox session as soon as you notice a return of your dynamic wrinkles. Repeating your Botox thins the muscle, prolonging the effects and preventing new lines and wrinkles from forming.
